Materials

Prepare

Prepare the following materials for an arterial blood sampling of the radial artery:

  • a pre-heparinized arterial blood gas syringe
  • a 22 – 25 gauge needle
  • a plastic bung (if the needle is not equipped with a sharps injury protection feature)
  • a syringe cap
  • non-sterile gloves
  • gauze swabs
  • medical tape
  • skin disinfectant (e.g. chlorhexidine)
  • a rolled up towel
  • hand disinfectant
  • a sharps container

Additionally the following materials may be necessary:

  • a container filled with ice (if a transport time longer than 20 minutes is expected)
  • an extension tube with a threeway stop cock and a vacutainer holder (if additional blood samples or blood cultures need to be taken)
  • an ultrasound transducer and ultrasound transmission gel (if the artery is difficult to locate)
