A phacoemulsification machine (phaco machine) is used to treat cataracts and vitreous disorders. In the phacoemulsification mode, the machine delivers ultrasound waves via a specialized handpiece to break down a cataract and irrigate the operating field while aspirating debris. When used to perform an anterior vitrectomy, a specialized handpiece with cutting, irrigation and aspiration functions is used. Before using the device, the periodic check record should be examined to ensure that inspection and maintenance of the device have been performed according to the schedule recommended by the manufacturer.
