Digit
Examine
Examine the affected digit for rotational deviations, and for altered sensation or impaired perfusion. Examine the adjacent joints for functionality and pain. This examination is used for comparison after splint application and to detect abnormalities which require immediate attention.
Rotational deviation
Care should be taken to rule out rotational deviation of the affected digit before splint application. If there is rotational deviation, reduction should be performed or even surgery if the reduction is not sufficient.
