Introduction

General

The use of electrosurgery can no longer be ignored in the modern operating theater. Over the years, however, it has been shown that there are health risks due to the production of surgical smoke after tissue vaporization has occurred. Surgical smoke contains toxic gases and possibly viral biological products. Smoke evacuation is therefore mandatory.

Laparoscopic procedures

Besides toxicity, surgical smoke may complicate laparoscopic procedures. This is by way of reducing visibility, as well as causing delays when smoke is cleared and time to restore the intra-abdominal or intrathoracic pressure in case of endoscopy.
