The Basics of Electrosurgery
Step by step
In this course we will present the basic principles of electrosurgery. It is the first in a series of courses on electrosurgery. In the first three courses, the basic principles, clinical effects, and laparoscopic application of electrosurgery will be discussed. Subsequent study should focus on specialty and device specific electrosurgical courses.
Today, electrosurgery is used in approximately 80% of all surgical procedures, as it is an effective tool for cutting and coagulation. These effects are achieved by heat generated due to a controlled amount of electricity flowing through tissue.
Still, there are a lot of hazards that may occur when using it and every year many patients and health care practitioners are injured needlessy by electrosurgical equipment. These injuries are almost always caused by user error and a general lack of understanding, and not equipment failure. By understanding the functioning of the specific generator, the best surgical effect can be obtained and side effects can be avoided. Electrosurgery is a complex technology that is often not well understood by clinicians. This course aims to change this.
