Case Study: Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC)

D.C.C. Cornelisse

The LUMC is a well-known academic hospital in the Netherlands. They believe and invest in the interactive interplay between teaching, research and patient care. Doing so, they play a leading role in the development of solutions for healthcare questions. For this case, we spoke to D.C.C. Cornelisse, OR Manager at the LUMC. Cornelisse was a nurse and nurse-anesthetist himself before becoming team leader at the Amsterdam’s academic hospital (AMC), and later, OR manager in the LUMC.

The OR department in the LUMC does a number of things. They support on an anesthetic level, provide scrub nurses to the operating room, organize the recovery room, provide post-operative care, and also run a team that takes care of facility services and logistics.

Cornelisse is responsible for the personnel policy (200 FTE), financial policy, operative care policy and the anesthesiological care policy. As Diederich mentions, his OR serves as a medical facilitation department, meaning the surgeons who bring their patients to the OR, are so called “customers” to the OR department.

The problem

As medical technologies and treatment evolve rapidly, the educational resources for the OR department started to become outdated.

If you ask a scrub nurse whether he or she is accredited, or whether they have the required level of knowledge, skills and competence to deliver great work, many will answer yes, but it is almost impossible to objectify this statement.

The challenge

Although the OR team has always aspired to a high level of professionalism across the board, it has become increasingly challenging to manage the accreditation and quality of their medical care. In order to guarantee the high standards they aspire, Cornelisse started looking for an efficient way to organize quality assurances and the formalities that come with that.

Before, scrub nurses would get their degree, and would then become experienced by working in the hospital. Every now and then they would participate in a congress or clinical lesson, and that would suffice. Today, we are dealing with innovation in the OR at an increasingly fast pace. Everything from digital imaging techniques, to requiring a new analytical and problem-solving skill set.

The solution

Cornelisse and his team started testing out the Incision Academy. The scrub nurse portfolio offers quality online education and training for scrub nurses and nurse anesthetists. The solution includes training on skills, medical devices, video courses with step-by-step methodology, and protocol support for the entire team. LUMC is able to connect the system to their Learning Management System (LMS), and track their employees’ learning progress accordingly. It offers the LUMC a digital way to solve the learning challenge and organize the CMT certification that’s required for the accreditation of OR personnel.

Everyone works hard and has been to school in order to be where they are. Naturally the roll-out came with some challenges, like adapting the individual learning into a full schedule. However, the majority picks it up positively and is motivated to learn more about the core of their profession.

The result

According to Cornelisse, 50% of their so-called digital quality passports are now up to date. He is positive about the developments on how the staff is picking up the new approach to digital learning.

The OR team has been working with Incision successfully for two years now, and the usage of the platform is increasing

Also, Cornelisse assigned two people from the learning & development team to collaborate and implement the Incision platform to help improve and add relevant courses to the portfolio. For Cornelisse, the Incision platform serves as an important hub to monitor the learning process in a way that is future-proof. He and his team can assess the progress of each employee during the quarterly review by simply checking into the certificate section and assess which courses were done.

Our ambition is that learning & development will be a common good. We want to see high involvement in professional practical learning, and be able to objectify and formalize the process through tests and certification.

Why Incision?

“Incision was very decisive in their collaboration with us. They listened to our challenges, such as directing the team to the right courses in order to get their quality passport complete. Incision picked that up and implemented it very fast. Now our people are linked directly to the right part in the Incision academy in order to complete the required tasks for accreditation.

It’s great to see Incision responding to our demands when it comes to developing new courses. As such, the learning portfolio is growing steadily.”
