Biography

Esther Consten was born in Heerlen in 1968. Currently she lives in Bilthoven and is the mother of three children. She started her studies in 1986 in Amsterdam. Initially she started a degree in Physical Geography at the University of Amsterdam. In 1987 she switched to a degree in Medicine at the University of Amsterdam after which she performed her PhD research on the topic of the “surgical aspect of AIDS”, which she finished in 1995.

In 1996 she started her residency in general surgery at the University of Amsterdam and thereafter she did two fellowships at the Medical Center in Alkmaar and at the Mt Sinai Hospital and at the Columbia University Hospital in New York. Since 2004, she has been working as an oncologic gastrointestinal surgeon at the Meander Medical Centre in Amersfoort. In 2006 Consten helped establish three futuristic endoscopic operating rooms in Amersfoort. Five years later a high-tech operating room with integrated robotic technology was added. Diaphragm, stomach, lung, liver, endocrine and colorectal interventions are performed in these futuristic ORs.

Esther Consten MD PhD is also a trainer for general surgery, chairman of the Dutch Association for Endoscopic Surgery (NVEC), chairman of the Working Group on Innovation and Endoscopic Surgery (WIEC) and chairman of the Working Group ColoProctology (WCP).
