Procedure and Surgeon Selection

In our previous blog, we introduced our Emerging Best Practices initiative, which aims to speed up the adoption of surgical innovations. Now we’ll dive deeper into two key steps of Phase 1: identifying the surgical procedures with the best short-term impact and selecting the leading surgeons in Europe to join our cause.

Step 1: Identifying the First Procedures
We began by identifying surgical procedures with the highest potential for short-term impact, considering several key factors in our analysis:

• Technological Impact: We prioritized procedures known for recent technological advancements driving surgical innovation.
• Financial Impact: We selected procedures that offer cost-saving benefits by improving efficiency.
• Best Practice Research Influence: We focused on procedures with the largest difference in daily procedure volume between average and expert surgeons.
• Patient Outcome Impact: We prioritized procedures with low postoperative patient satisfaction and high mortality, offering the greatest potential for improvement.

After this analysis, we selected 4 surgical disciplines and identified the top two procedures within each discipline. These procedures became the focus for selecting the top surgeons to join our Emerging Best Practices initiative.

Step 2: Selecting Leading Surgeons in Europe
We selected Europe's leading surgeons in these areas, ensuring we partnered with experts who could significantly impact our project and the field.
We identified a general list of top surgeons based on their expertise and geographic location. We examined the websites of major surgical conferences and committees to find members and keynote speakers. From this list, we prioritized surgeons who are actively performing surgeries to better capture their real-world techniques. To quantify their contributions, we evaluated their research output over the past five years using databases such as PubMed and Scopus. Additionally, we are focusing on surgeons from high-volume, efficient hospitals to align with the goals of our Emerging Best Practices initiative.

As we continue to expand, our goal is to collaborate with more renowned surgeons across Europe.
